Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that requires extensive training and education. In the United Kingdom, orthodontic specialists must complete three years of full-time training, as well as pursue a higher degree. But what impact does this additional education have on the practice of orthodontics? To answer this question, a survey was conducted among members of the British Orthodontic Society (BOS).The objective of the survey was to investigate the perceptions of orthodontic specialists in the United Kingdom about the possibility of pursuing a higher degree as part of their specialized training in orthodontics. An anonymous, descriptive, online questionnaire-based survey was distributed to specialist orthodontists in the United Kingdom through the BOS mailing list.
This included members of the Consulting Orthodontists Group, the Group of Orthodontic Specialists, the Group of University Professors, the Community Group and the specialists of the Training Degrees Group. The survey results showed that most orthodontic specialists in the UK believe that pursuing a higher degree is beneficial for their practice. The majority of respondents reported that they felt more confident in their ability to diagnose and treat patients with malocclusions after completing their higher degree. They also reported feeling more knowledgeable about current trends and developments in orthodontics. In addition to gaining knowledge and confidence, pursuing a higher degree can also open up new career opportunities for orthodontic specialists. Many respondents reported that they had been offered new positions or promotions after completing their higher degree.
This suggests that employers value the additional education and experience that comes with pursuing a higher degree. Overall, it is clear that pursuing a higher degree can be beneficial for UK orthodontists. It can provide them with additional knowledge and confidence in their practice, as well as open up new career opportunities.
